A Soldering Clinic will be conducted by Andrea Gromeaux-Schnaith, and Jen Jackson. This Clinic will cover subjects including torch safety, overall general information on soldering non-ferrous metals; basic soldering chemistry of metals, solder, and flux; 8-steps of joining; torch control; and soldering techniques. Student participation will include hands-on practice using repetitive exercises and observation discussion. Hand-on soldering exercises will focus on soldering various joints and multiple joints; small scale and isolation soldering techniques; soldering aids; negative and positive heat sink; solder inhibitors; and troubleshooting.
Various tools and equipment are provided by the GJGMC shop. The instructors will have a kit for each student with all the necessary materials at an extra cost. Average cost of the kit will be about $30.00. The kit can be purchased at the beginning of the class. To keep the material cost low, students will be working with copper sheet and wire metal for their hands-on exercises. This is a soldering practice clinic; therefore, students will not be working on any specific project. An email will be sent to registered students before the class to provide more details. There is no prerequisite class requirement for this Soldering Clinic.
Note: Various chemicals are used during the process of metalsmithing so wear clothing that you are not afraid to get soiled. Wearing closed-toed shoes, long pants, and non-synthetic clothing is required for your safety.
Class costs are $60.00 for members and $120.00 for non-members, paid to the club at time of registration.
